about
This piece was inspired by a woodblock print by the great Japanese artist of the Ukiyoe period, Katsushika Hokusai. The print is of the nobleman and poet Abe no Nakamaro. According to legend, he was sent to China to discover the secrets of the Chinese calendar, but was captured by the Chinese Emperor. In captivity, he looks out over the ocean and sees the full moon. He thinks to himself that he is seeing the very same moon that is shining over his homeland of Japan, to which he will never return. It is this sense of longing for an unattainable, far-off place that I have sought to convey in this piece This image inspired the title of the piece, Reflection. The double meaning of this word is quite appropriate to the mood of the piece. The literal reflection of the moon is just the beginning; the reflection that goes on in our minds is the real journey. - Daniel Morse
